An Industry of Growing Importance

The dairy industry is becoming increasingly important in developing countries.  Growing consumption of dairy products has driven expansion at both consumer and production ends of the supply chain.  In tandem with this growth are government-led programmes to improve disease control, as well as feed production and marketing opportunities increasing the demand for dairy herds.  Dairy cattle are being managed by both large companies and smallholders working with cooperatives.

ILRIC can provide support to these developing industries through the provision of genetic material, management and marketing advice and training, decision-support systems and assistance with regulatory and policy development.

ILRIC can offer specific advice and support via its Core Partners in the Dairy Industry in the following areas:

Data Processing - On-Line

  • Production recording
  • Reproduction management
  • Herd management
  • Conformation
  • Genetic evaluation

Financial Management

Milk Harvesting

  • Milking machines
  • In-shed management packages

Milk Handling

Breed Registry System

The Breed Registry System has been developed as a comprehensive system for maintaining the databases of dairy breed societies. It integrates into one database a wide range of functions including; registrations, transfers, membership data, type classification, milk production and estimated breeding values. A comprehensive system for internet enquiry and listing of animals for sale is also available.

New registrations may be submitted by paper, over the Internet or by telephone. This will allow, for example, Holstein breeders in China to register cattle on Australia's Holstein-Friesian database. The Holstein-Friesian, Jersey, Ayrshire and Red Breed Associations are all users of the system operating in Australia, USA, Canada and the Republic of South Africa.

Breeders in any country can process online registrations using the Breed Registry System. This allows Holstein breeders in China to register cattle on Australia's Holstein-Friesian database. The Holstein-Friesian, Jersey, Ayrshire and Red Breed are all users of the system which is operating in Australia, USA, Canada and South Africa.
